Discovery - What don't you know?

Most of the world of management information and business intelligence is focused on the idea of analysing, reporting and distributing information related to the areas of the business where you have a clear vision and understanding of what is happening. This may either be through past experience or because the information itself suggests something very obvious (what we refer to as the "big spike syndrome").

This has several drawbacks:

  • past experience leads to a bias and can detract from true understanding
  • when something is obvious in the information, it is usually too late to do anything about it
  • you may be missing something very significant that you haven't come across before

Whilst it is necessary to keep a continuous watch on those things you already understand as being important to the business, it is also highly desirable to actually start finding out about those things that you may not yet understand or have knowledge about - it is in this area where Discovery becomes immensely beneficial.

By definition, Discovery finds out new trends and relationships within information sets. As such, technology is required to facilitate this in the form of algorithms tailored to discovering the unknown rather than modelling the known.
